Supporting homeless people in Burton on Trent
A note from the team:
During these difficult times, our usual services are mostly suspended as we put the safety of our volunteers at the forefront and are encouraging them to stay home. We are operating a limited service - mostly food parcel deliveries - until lockdown is lifted.
Stay safe everyone.
Street Food is a not-for-profit group based in Burton on Trent. We have no agenda, no politics, just a need to feed and support!
We are a group of volunteers from the Burton area who share a passion for helping the homeless people we meet on the streets, each with their own stories to tell and who face different challenges.
We link with other local support groups and agencies to join up the many services available - so that each and every homeless person can be fully aware of the opportunities and support available in Burton on Trent.
We all offer our time with Street Food as unpaid volunteers: Andrea, Tracey, Tracy, Holli, Martin, Sharon, Alex, Gurdeep, Janina, Charlotte and many others who support us behind the scenes - Denise, Jayne, Abbey - and sometimes come down to help too.
There are lots of things you can do to help the homeless community in Burton on Trent. We know that the official government figures are on the low side - we are aware of most of the homeless people with many more unaccounted for as they might be in temporary accommodation, sofa surfing, passing through or simply not known. We also help those transitioning from the street who may have accommodation but not very much else. We seem to see new faces every week. We feed and signpost the hungry people in our area and would love your support.
From running events and fundraising, collecting donations to joining our team out on the streets - you can make a difference whenever you have the time. No commitment needed. We do what we can, when we can.
Like any not-for-profit we need funds to operate. 100% of every donation goes towards supporting our homeless community in Burton via food we provide and the essentials required for our pop up sessions. All of our team are unpaid.
Our volunteers involved in food provision all hold the appropriate Food Hygiene and Safety qualifications and we operate within their parameters. We are also registered with East Staffordshire County Council. Our service is spotlessly clean and high standards are always maintained. We were awarded 5-star hygiene rating in January 2020 which we're very proud of, especially given the circumstances we operate under (outdoors and mobile!).
Every Thursday evening
The Washlands, near to Burton Library
6.30pm - 8.00pm
We operate an outdoor, pop-up food station offering hot drinks, bottled water and food. We provide home-cooked food provided by volunteers, complete with an ingredient list to cater for any allergies or food requirements. Our homeless friends enjoy our freshly prepared salads, snacks and cakes too. Cereals and fresh, cold milk is another popular choice as it's tasty, filling and kinda homely! We also provide breakfast bags (juice, cereal bar, fruit and a pastry) and lunch bags so we are happily covering 3 mealtimes in one go.
Dogs are not forgotten either as a few of our homeless community have dogs - so we always have a bowl of fresh water and dog food available. We are a canine loving team so dog welfare is close to our hearts.
Every Saturday morning
YMCA (access dining room from back road), Burton on Trent
9.30am - 11.00am
On a Saturday morning we set up at the YMCA, using their kitchen and our food. We offer cereals, toast, yogurts, fresh juice, hot drinks and a Full English breakfast (it's amazing - ham and cheese omelettes, sausages, hash browns, beans, mushrooms and toast). We are grateful to the YMCA staff for allowing us the opportunity to do this.
